From a very young age, August Wilson (born Frederick August Kittel Jr.) had a love of language... When his mother took him to the library, his whole world opened up. Freddy pored over every book--from Hardy Boy mysteries to biographies to great African American writers like Langston Hughes and Ralph Ellison... At school, Freddy faced racial prejudice from students and from some teachers, too. He dropped out of high school, but spent his days instead at the public library, where he continued to read and learn independently. He also walked the streets of his Pittsburgh neighborhood and sat in eateries, observing the people who lived there and listening to what they said. He wrote poems and stories based on those voices and eventually used them in his plays. Wilson would go on to win numerous awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes for his work... Like many of his plays, Feed Your Mind is told in two acts, revealing how Wilson grew up to be one of the most influential American playwrights.
